Alex Gordon and Darwin Barney in front of Brendan Ryan? One is a failed 3B sent to the easiest position that is left field. He does it well but dude, it is LF. There is no way Gordon is more valuable to a team on defense that an elite SS. The same holds true for Barney. A 2B is a Guy that is where the lesser talented middle infielder goes. Playing SS is an invite to March Madness and winning. Playing 2B and being the best is liken to winning the NIT. Barney was eat but Ryan posted the better overall stats and at the #1 premium position. Catcher is a different animal and should really be in it’s own category. But if you are going to rank defenders it isn’t an apples to apples comparison. A SS plays a much bigger role. Think of the NFL. A lineman may have one of the all time great season but if a QB also has a greatn season it is not even close as to who will win the MVP. Ryan could probably play LF or 2B and win a gold glove but i guarantee that Gordon and Barney could never be replacement level at SS.
